Malone also examines her relationship with frequent costar John Wayne and her relationship with director John Ford and he addresses the hotly debated question of whether or not the screen diva was a feminist or an antifeminist character. She was an iconic film star during the golden age cinema, yet her preference for privateness as well as her habit of making statements which were in opposition to her personal choices made her an unsolved mystery.
